Port Notes 11 March 2014

From the Desk of Capt. Jeff Monroe

COLD WEATHER IN GREAT LAKES MAY LIMIT TRADE

Ice cover in the Great Lakes between the US and Canada was estimated at 95% at its peak and a slow thaw has been predicted by meteorologists in both Canada and the US. This could impact full return to maritime trade and a possible shorter shipping season.

CANADIAN DOLLAR EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TO FALL

The Canadian dollar continues slow fall reaching just above $.89 US Dollar today. Predictions from various economists predict it could reach as low as $.85 US by summer. Good for tourism, not so for some trade.

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

The US Department of Homeland Security has tasked the National Maritime Security Advisory Committee with recommending guidelines for maritime professionals to use for reporting of suspicious activity at facilities. Beth Rooney of the Port Authority of NY and NJ is sub-committee chair and comments/recommendations can be sent to her via this email.

COMMERCE DROPS

The US Army Corp has reported that between 2011 and 2012 US waterborne commerce dropped 2.6 percent to 2.3 billion tons. China’s exports dropped 18% in 2012 due to decreased production and a higher demand from domestic Chinese markets.
